With a lot of folks getting their hands on the iPhone 5 for the first time today, there are understandably a lot of drop tests hitting YouTube. One of the more interesting drop tests comes from the folks at Android Authority, who pitted the iPhone 5 against the Samsung Galaxy S III. The results of the test are definitely surprising, so this is one that you’ll absolutely want to check out.




In an effort to make this drop test as realistic as possible, the phones were dropped from various heights. First, the phones were dropped from a height around two-and-a-half feet to simulate a user dropping their phone while pulling it out of their pocket. In the second part of the test, the phones were both dropped from a height of four feet, which simulates a drop while you’re putting the phone up to you ear to answer a call. With the third round, both phones were dropped from ear height, which is about 5’6″ in this case. Finally, the iPhone 5 was dropped from a height of around 5’10″ – the Galaxy S III sat this test out, sadly.

After the first round, both phones were still on an equal playing field. Though the cases on both suffered some scratches, neither phone showed any damage on the screen. The second test wasn’t so kind on the Galaxy S III – while the iPhone’s screen remained unscathed after the second the test, the Galaxy S III landed on its upper left corner, which shattered the top part of the screen. The good news is that the Galaxy S III’s touch screen was still functioning after the impact, so at least there’s that.

With the third test, the Galaxy S III suffered even more damage while the iPhone 5 remained in tact. The battery cover on the Galaxy S III flew off when the phone hit the ground, and the drop caused the screen to crack even more. When it came time to drop the iPhone 5 from 5’10″, once again the screen didn’t give. At the end of everything, the iPhone 5 held up suprisingly well, with only a few scuffs on the sides and corners and a few dents in the aluminum on the back.





Of course, with drop tests it’s always a crapshoot. Sometimes phones will drop on a corner, which is usually enough to crack the screen, and other times it won’t, making it hard to gauge just how well a phone holds up when dropped. Still, this drop test should give us a general idea of how resilient the iPhone 5 is, and it seems to safe to say that it’s quite a bit tougher than the delicate iPhones of the past. Samsung Device Mock-Up Looks Good But Is It the Galaxy S III? 


 Samsung Galaxy S III or Galaxy S3, regardless of the naming, the world is positive that this will be the Next Galaxy to be unveiled in London on May 3. We've seen lots of rumors, leaks and reports (almost Apple-like buzz) and this morning we've seen a picture of the alleged device. 

While the picture looks like the one depicted in the leaked service manual, we now have a mock-up based on the said manual which seems to resemble the real-life picture. The question here, due to many conflicting reports, is whether this is the Galaxy S III/3 or not? Do you think it is possible for the South Korean manufacturer to release not one, but two phones? Say a Galaxy S II+/Plus and the Galaxy S III/3??

Galaxy S III beats all comers in AnTuTu benchmark 

With the Samsung “next Galaxy” event fast approaching, news of the impending Galaxy S III is coming in from all over. The latest and certainly most interesting tidbit comes from the AnTuTu benchmark app, which keeps a database of the fastest devices that have used their app and servers. Lo and behold, the Galaxy S III showed up in the results today, smoking every other Android device yet tested. Yup, even the reigning king of processor performance, the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime. 

And here’s the really interesting bit: the Galaxy S III appears to have done it with a dual-core processor. The device in question was using an Exynos chip, but not the quad-core version we had been expecting from other leaks. The processor is an Exynos 4212 running at 1.4Ghz. Note that every benchmark is different; other well-known testing methods may put the Tegra 3 or Snapdragon S4 on top. But in any case, there’s little doubt that the Galaxy S III will be a performance monster. 

Other specs on display back up rumors we had heard previously, including a 4.7-inch 720p screen, 12-megapixel camera and Android 4.0. The front-facing camera is a whopping 2 megapixels, while the system memory is a more conventional 1GB (not the 2GB we’d heard from at least one source). While the dual-core chip is just a little disappointing, it looks like the Galaxy S III won’t be suffering much from just two cores. Another 'Next Galaxy' dummy unit appears, throws Android style guide to the wind 

Except it ain't. It's another bit of secrecy in the never ending chain of Samsung Galaxy Next S III tales, and this one from the Taiwanese forum mobile01 truly takes the cake. The casing, yellow friction tape and all, is clearly not the finished product and the monstrosity of an action bar across the bottom makes me hope the view on the screen is faked as well. Don't get me wrong -- I'm a fan of buttons, including the coveted menu button, but forcing it off to the wrong side as in the above screen is not only against the Android style guidelines, but it's a giant mess for app development waiting to happen. At least HTC's offerings would look right when (if) apps get updated with the ICS UI. But this? There's no rhyme or reason. 

I want to see this phone as much as the next guy. I'm excited to see what Samsung counters the HTC One series with, but if this is it I'm going to have to say no thanks Samsung. That's why I'm not buying it.

Another Purported Picture Of the Samsung Galaxy S III


 Let's jump right in: the device pictured above is claimed to be the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III. The image has been allegedly snapped by a person who claims to have the device in his hands for testing purposes.

No details were attached to the picture but let's see what we can make out of it. We have the classic Samsung design (which didn't change much over time from the original Galaxy S to the Galaxy S II and the alleged S III in the purported image above). Still, the device above seems to be spot on with recent rumors we've heard about the Galaxy S II refresh.

According to those the upcoming device will still feature a home button, thus slimmer, elongated. As you can see in the image, it appears that way. Additionally, the same rumors were talking about a five-row icon display which, even if censored, can be seen above. We're not sure this is the Galaxy S III but it looks like the picture above matches the most recent rumors. Oh, and from the looks of it, we're seeing vanilla ICS (at least the program tray which definitely looks different with TouchWiz).

What do you think, real of fake? We say fake (hints: screen seems to almost overlap Samsung branding at the top; display isn't parallel with device top and bottom, blue line at the top broken at the middle, etc.).
